Skates and Blades win Emo tourney

Three Fort Frances teams skated home winners from the novice hockey tournament in Emo last weekend.
Skates and Blades took the Showalter’s Flying Service ‘A’ title, Foodtown Fury captured the M.L. Judson Trucking Ltd. ‘B’ event final, and the Times Tigers won the Village Variety ‘C’ crown.
Skates and Blades opened action with a 3-1 win over the Emo Wings on goals by Zach McCool (two) and Matthew Hebert, then they romped past the Dryden Flyers 10-3.
Ben Morrisseau, Matthew Hebert, Zach McCool, and Kyle Turgeon each had two goals in that one, with Blake Wepruk and Jamie Kaun adding singles.
In the semi-finals, they edged West End Motors (Fort Frances) 2-1. Matthew Hebert and Kyle Turgeon hit the twine for Skates and Blades while Ben Drazenovich replied for West End Motors.
Then in the final, Skates and Blades doubled the Emo Rockets 4-2 on goals by Kyle Turgeon (two), Zach McCool, and Matthew Hebert. Charlie DeBungee and Ryan Witherspoon replied for the Rockets.
The Rockets started out with a 2-1 win over the Foodtown Fury, scoring the game-winner with just four seconds left on the clock.
Chris Mutz and Ryan Witherspoon scored for the Rockets in that one while Charlie Windego replied for the Fury.
Then the Rockets dumped the Times Tigers 9-0, led by four-goal performances by Ryan Witherspoon and Luke Judson. Charlie DeBungee got Emo’s other goal.
Then in the semi-final, the Rockets skated past Emo OPP 5-3 on goals by Ryan Witherspoon (three) and Charlie DeBungee with (two). Jordy Davis (two) and Alex Marusyk scored for the OPP.
The Foodtown Fury nipped the Emo Wings 1-0 in the ‘B’ final, with Matthew Depiero netting the game-winner with just three seconds on the clock.
The Fury had lost their first game to the Emo Rockets 2-1 but then they came back strong against the Times Tigers for a 3-0 victory on goals by Matthew Depiero, Logan Allen, and Kyle Herr.
Foodtown then nipped Tagg’s (Fort Frances) 2-1 in the ‘B’ semi-finals on goals by Logan Allen and Mitchell Carlson. Neil Roy found the mark for Tagg’s.
The Emo Wings lost their first game 3-1 to Skates and Blades, then bounced back 6-0 over the Dryden Flyers on goals by Jared Baker (three), Justin Donaldson (two), and Ash Woolsey.
In the semi-final against B.R. Davidson, they won 2-1 on goals by Josh Pollard and Jared Baker.
After a shaky start, the Times Tigers won the ‘C’ event with a 4-1 win over the Dryden Flyers. Alex Shoemaker (two), Steve Williams, and Brandon Thompson sparked the Tigers to victory.
In the semi-finals against Bar-B-Q Bob’s (Kenora), the Tigers erased a 4-3 deficit with two late third-period goals by Alex Shoemaker and Josh Sigurdson for a 5-4 win.
Meanwhile, Dryden nipped Lake of the Woods 3-2 in the other semi-final, scoring all their goals in the third after falling behind 2-0 after two.
