Six teams still vying for fastball title

The battle for bragging rights as the 2005 champions of the Rainy River District Fastball League is now down to six teams after last night’s playoff action—and two more will be eliminated from contention tomorrow night.
The league trophy could be handed out as early as next Thursday (Aug. 25), or the final will be played Tuesday, Aug. 30 if any team has suffered just one setback in post-season play up to that date.
In last night’s action, first-place Rainy River edged Stratton 4-3, with Murray Armstrong picking up the win. Curtis Berg took the loss.
Meanwhile in Barwick, Sight & Sound pitcher Harvey Flamand led his third-place team to an upset 5-4 victory over the home team, which had finished the regular season in second place.
George Oltsher was tagged with the loss.
And Chops Handorgan picked up a victory as Big Island thumped Sabaskong 15-5. Rick Copenace took the loss.
Red Gut Bay and Big Grassy also were slated to meet last night, but Red Gut forfeited the game.
All six teams still in contention will be back in action tomorrow night. Sight & Sound has a date with Rainy River, Barwick takes on Big Grassy, and Big Island meets Stratton.
The winner of the Sight & Sound-Rainy River contest will face the winner of the Barwick-Big Grassy game next Tuesday (Aug. 23) while the loser moves on to play the winner of Big Island-Stratton matchup.
