Three holdovers, two former members of the Kings, and a masked Muskie who is moving on.
That summarizes the six Rainy River District players who made the roster of the Kenora Thistles for the coming season in the Manitoba Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League.
The returning veterans with local connections include forwards Jake Clendenning and Sully Shortreed, along with defenceman Colton Bodnar.
Shortreed was the most productive of the trio of former Muskies who played on the 2016 OFSAA championship team, notching nine goals and nine assists in 38 games with the Thistles.
He also picked up 20 penalty minutes.
Bodnar, meanwhile, had 11 assists in 42 games, to go along with 79 penalty minutes.
Clendenning had a goal and seven assists in 42 games while chalking up 30 penalty minutes.
New to the Thistles this season will be forwards Cooper Witherspoon and Ethan Jourdain.
Both played for the Thunder Bay Minor Midget ‘AAA’ Kings last season.
Also heading to Kenora is Matt Booth, who helped backstop the black-and-gold to their 10th-straight NorWOSSA title as the team’s starting goalie.
The Thistles missed the playoffs last season, finishing 10th in the 12-team league with a 15-24-2-3 record.
They’ll play their regular-season opener Sept. 30 at home against the Norman Northstars.
