Kris Sinclair and her rinkmates came up a dollar short in “The Big Nickel.”
The Fort Frances Curling Club skip and her rink of third Lisa Penner, second Cathy Gruttner, and lead Cyndy Strand went 1-4 to finish in a tie for fifth in the six-team field at the 2008-09 Dominion women’s curling club provincial showdown in Copper Cliff.
Sinclair’s quartet, which had qualified for the Northern Ontario showdown back in March, lost its opener 5-3 to Annie Macsemchuk (Kakabeka Falls) in the first of Sinclair’s three games on Friday.
The local rink then fell 7-6 in a heart-breaker to Stephanie Sammon (Sault Ste. Marie), with Sammon stealing the winning point in an extra end.
Sinclair bounced back with a 9-6 extra-end decision over Brenda Johnston (Sudbury) to close out a busy opening day.
Saturday did not go well for Sinclair, though. First, eventual champion Patti McKnight (New Liskeard) romped to an 8-2 victory in just six ends.
Then the Fort Frances crew wrapped up with a 6-2 loss to Karen Saarimaki (Geraldton).
McKnight bounced Macsemchuk 7-3 in the title game Sunday to advance to the national championship Nov. 24-29 in Toronto.
