Kris Sinclair’s rink from Fort Frances beat Nancy Campbell (Atikokan) 11-3 after six ends at the regional playdowns in Atikokan on March 21-22 to advance to the Dominion Curling Northern Ontario provincials.
Sinclair beat Campbell 8-6 in an earlier game and also nipped Carol George (Sioux Lookout) 8-7 to finish at 3-0.
On the men’s side, Arlo Jewell (Atikokan) downed Don DeBenedet (Fort Frances) 6-4 in the final after edging Bryan Bonot (Stratton) 7-6 in the semi-finals.
The Dominion of Canada has created a championship aimed at the regular club curler, and both a male and female team will be crowned as national champs in November at the St. George’s Curling Club in Toronto.
“In recent years, the attention of Canadians has been focused on elite curlers. Why not? Our curlers are the best in the world,” Dominion president George Cooke said in a press release.
“We believe that something is missing, however, and that is a national championship for the ‘regular’ club curler.
“We want to give every club curler the opportunity to compete beyond their club for a Canadian title,” Cooke added.
“Teams from all 10 provinces and three territories, plus a separate entry for Northern Ontario, will compete at the national championships.”
The six regional winners in both men’s and women’s, including Sinclair, will travel to a provincial event in late October in either Sudbury or Sault Ste. Marie.
