Silver showing for Muskie girls

Staff

The Muskie girls’ hockey team has seen success in tournament play so far this season—a trend that continued over the weekend in Portage la Prairie, Man.
The black-and-gold finished the round-robin portion of the tournament in first place overall, which put them into the final.
Once there, however, Fort High fell to their perennial thorn in the side, the Pembina Tigers, who came away with a 4-2 victory.
The Tigers have won the Muskies’ home tournament each of the last two seasons.
Fort High rolled early on in the tournament, bombing the Garden City Gophers (Winnipeg) 10-1 in their first game.
Jillian Langtry came through with a hat trick and seven points overall, with Shae-lynn Smith and Ericka Tymkin adding two goals apiece.
Katie Sinclair, Shelby Rea, and Jessica Taggart also scored.
Then in their second game, Fort High rolled over host Portage 8-1.
Langtry and Smith both notched hat tricks in that one while Ericka Tymkin and Shelby Tymkin added singles.
The Muskie then wrapped up group play with a 7-1 trouncing of St. Norbert.
Langtry and Taggart led the way with a pair of goals each while defenders Melanie Scott and Danielle Jean also hit the twine.
Sinclair rounded out the scoring.
It was a different story in the final, however, as Pembina skated away with the 4-2 win.
Fort High allowed a pair of goals about a minute apart in the first period to fall behind 2-0, then the Tigers scored another in the third to go up 3-0.
Scott and Smith brought the Muskies to within 3-2, but Pembina sealed the gold medal with an empty-netter late in the third.
The Muskies have a busy week ahead as they’ll play three games in four nights, beginning tomorrow (Dec. 14) when they host Baudette in exhibition action at 7 p.m. in Emo.
Then they’ll hit the road for a pair of NorWOSSA games, visiting Kenora on Thursday before meeting Dryden the following night.
