All that Chris Silver and his rink have left to play for is pride.
The Fort Frances skip, along with third Reece Jones, second Kurt McGuire, and lead Matthew Nowak, are out of contention at the Northern Ontario junior men’s curling playdowns in Sault Ste. Marie after struggling through a difficult weekend.
The still-Bantam eligible team sat in fifth place in the eight-team field with a 2-4 record heading into their final round-robin match this afternoon.
Silver lost his first four games before finally getting into the win column last night with a 7-5 victory over fellow Region 1 rep Jaron Hoppe (Sioux Lookout).
He then dumped Sam Cull (Sudbury) 9-0 in five ends this morning.
Silver stole all nine points in the game—scoring a deuce in the first without hammer and then scoring three more in the second.
He added singles in the third and fourth ends before closing with another deuce in the fifth.
Silver opened play Saturday with an 8-2 loss in eight ends to Zach Warkentin (Thunder Bay) before getting dumped 11-1 in seven ends by Brendan Acorn (Sudbury).
Then yesterday, the locals were dumped 10-3 in six ends by Chris Glibota (Sault Ste. Marie) before being beaten 7-2 by defending provincial champ Tanner Horgan (Sudbury).
They closed out the day by topping Hoppe.
Silver will go for his third-straight win this afternoon when he takes on Max Cull.
Horgan and Warkentin entered play this morning tied for first at 5-0, with Glibota and Acorn right behind at 4-1.
Any tie-breakers (if needed) will be held tonight, with the semi-finals and final taking place tomorrow.
The winner moves on to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior playdowns Jan. 24-Feb. 1 in Corner Brook, N.L.
