Sight and Sound lose playoff opener

Last night marked the opening of the Rainy River District Fastball League playoffs, with Sight and Sound (Fort Frances) falling 8-3 to the defending champion Emo Bulldogs.
Bulldog veterans Shane Bliss and Don Copenace set the tone early, each belting home runs in the early innings to give Emo a sizable lead for strong-armed Warren Voth on the mound.
“They got some early runs and that was all,” said Sight and Sound outfielder Ed Vold. “That was the death warrant for us. Warren is a strong pitcher and he doesn’t make it easy on anybody.”
Vold and captain Derek McKinnon homered for Sight and Sound in a losing cause.
The game was played at VanJura Stadium here after the centrefield fence at Emo’s ball diamond, where the game was supposed to be played, was still down from the storms two weeks ago.
The Bulldogs, who sported the best regular-season record, were supposed to have homefield advantage against last-place Sight and Sound.
In other action yesterday, Pinewood upended Zig’s Place (no score was available), Barwick dumped Big Island, 17-9, and Big Grassy upset second-place Stratton 9-4.
Under the RRDFL’s double-knockout playoff rule, Sight and Sound will be out if they lose to Zig’s Place this coming Tuesday. “This is it,” noted Vold. “We lose and we’re done.”
Other matches Tuesday will see Emo at Pinewood, Big Grassy at Barwick, and Big Island at Stratton. All games will begin at 6:30 p.m.
