No matter what position they play, every member of the Muskie girls’ hockey team is finding a way to contribute these days.
Fort High maintained its shutout streak in NorWOSSA play after posting a 10-0 win over the host Kenora Broncos on Tuesday night.
The Muskies now have gone 247:21 without allowing a goal in league play—dating back to the third period of its season-opener Nov. 24 against the Dryden Eagles.
The squad has outscored its regular-season foes by a whopping 56-4 so far.
Head coach Todd Hamilton took his philosophy of getting every player comfortable with every spot on the ice by playing the entire game using his defensive corps on the forward lines and moving some of his forwards to guard the blueline.
“Now we know we have some other options on forward and defence,” he explained.
“We’ll definitely try, once in a while, to have forwards back on the point during power plays and have the defence down low in front of the net.
“The best part about the game was the enthusiasm the players showed,” Hamilton added.
“They got to see different aspects of the game.
“The forwards found out it’s not so easy to make that first pass out of the zone [while] the defence who were up front discovered it’s not so easy to reel in that pass if it’s not right to you,” he said.
Sydney Beck earned her second shutout of the season and has allowed only four goals in three NorWOSSA games so far.
The Muskies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first on goals by Siobhan Mackintosh, Lauren Hamilton, Rachel Jean, Sam McKinnon, and Lauren Vold.
Moriah Carradice and Avery Cates netted second-period goals to make it 7-0.
Janelle Kaemingh, Hanna LeDrew, and Carradice tallied in the third to round out the scoring.
The Muskie girls are in Thunder Bay this weekend for exhibition games against the Confederation College Thunderhawks, the Midget ‘AA’ Queens, and the Fury Midget ‘B’ squad.
Meanwhile, the Muskie boys’ hockey team figured the more pucks, the merrier on Tuesday night in Kenora.
Using a 49-16 advantage in shots on goal, the black-and-gold eventually wore down the Broncos in picking up a 7-2 victory.
Fort High (5-0) fell behind 1-0 early in the first on Corbin Paypompee’s marker.
But the Muskies stormed back with four-straight goals by Graeme Kitt (two), Matt Cheetham, and Chase McGuire.
The Broncos trimmed the gap to 4-2 later in the second, but it was all Fort High in the third as Brent Jourdain, Kendyn Faragher, and Cheetham scored to ice the victory.
Matt Booth made his fourth-straight start between the pipes and remains unbeaten in NorWOSSA play, making 14 saves to earn the win.
The Muskies are in Brandon, Man. today as they look to defend their title at the Victoria Inn tournament.
Fort High, in Pool #2 of the eight-pool, 24-team extravaganza, faces off against the Sanford Collegiate Sabres tonight at 8 p.m.
The Muskies then take on their victims in last year’s gold-medal game, the John Taylor Pipers (Winnipeg), tomorrow at noon.
