Sharks finish season on winning note

They finished their season with a result they’ve been accustomed to—a tournament victory.
The Fort Frances Gillons’ Insurance Sharks competed in the 24th-annual Neebing Minor Hockey March Classic in Thunder Bay last weekend and returned home with the ‘A’ gold medal wrapped snugly around their necks.
“It was great,” said head coach Kerry Grinsell. “We’ve got some pretty good hockey players and they bonded really well together.”
This was the third ‘A’ title the Sharks have garnered this season, which is more than many players are able to claim over their career.
“It was a really good season, but I wish it wasn’t ending,” said Grinsell.
The Sharks opened with a 2-2 tie against the Nipigon Elks on goals by Cole Godbout and Tyler Fontana. Monty Visser was credited with the assist.
Then Fontana was the offensive star against the host Neebing Blue Jackets, scoring four times in the team’s 6-3 victory. Visser notched the other two goals while Godbout, Brodie Plourde, and Thomas LePine drew assists.
Fontana also led the way in the Sharks’ 7-1 romp over the Westfort Prosvita Rangers (Thunder Bay), scoring five goals while Ben George added a pair.
Jason Goldamer (two), Dylan Grinsell (two), Cody Ward, Godbout, and Gabriel Handorgan added assists.
They lost their final round-robin game by a 1-0 score to Thunder Bay Northwood to finish second in Pool ‘B,’ but they bounced back in the semi-final against the West End Bruins, who had finished atop Pool ‘A.’
And it was Fontana once again leading the charge, scoring his team’s first four goals before Godbout and Ward added singles to make the final score 6-1 win.
Grinsell, Goldamer, LePine, Ward, and Godbout all drew assists.
The ‘A’ final would pit the Sharks against the Manitouwadge Copper Kings in a tightly-contested game, with the locals relying on two goals from Fontana to squeak by 2-1.
Grinsell got the lone assist.
