Seven drivers compete at Topless Nationals

On Oct. 18, seven of our local stock car drivers made the trip to Ogilvie, Mn. to take part in the 10th-annual Topless Nationals.
The event helps support and raise money for breast cancer in the state of Minnesota. The cars removed their tops and showed their bars!
There were 41 Modifieds, 69 Midwest Mods, 27 Street Stocks, 32 Super Stocks and nine Mod-Fours for a total of 178 cars.
The only local female driver to attend was Jyllian Westover with her yellow #41 Street Stock. This was her first time racing at Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway.
Friday night she finished ninth in her first heat and fifth in her second heat. She did give the wall a bit of a kiss in her first heat, but it didn’t stop her. She was back at it like nothing happened for the second heat.
When I spoke with her about what she thought, Westover stated, “I’ll be back. It’s a different track, it seems much bigger in general.”
When I asked her about hitting the wall, she said, “The cement wall really sneaks up on you.”
Saturday night saw Miss Westover finish 22nd in the final feature.
Tanner Williamson isn’t a rookie when it comes to racing at the Ogilvie track.
This was his third year participating in the Topless National. When I asked Tanner why he keeps coming back to the Big O, he noted that “it’s a fast track with good people.”
Williamson finished 4th in his first heat Friday night and 6th in his second heat.
On Saturday, the young man finished third in his B main, guaranteeing him a place in the final Midwest Modified race of the weekend. Unfortunately, Williamson was unable to finish the final feature race, but never fear, he’ll get them next year.
Dean Kellar was another one of our local guys that made the journey to take part in the Topless Nationals with his Street Stock.
The green and white 54x finished eighth in his first heat. In the second heat, Kellar found himself being towed off the track before the race started due to a mechanical issue.
Saturday night’s feature saw Kellar’s position end with a DNF.
Meanwhile, this was Raice Westovers third year at Ogilvie with his Street Stock, but his first year with his Modified race car.
One race car should be enough for a young man but I guess he likes living on the edge. In his first heat with the Modified, Raice finished ninth, then in the second heat he finished in 11th.
Unfortunately, on Saturday he didn’t make it into the main show with the red 15r Modified.
However, Westover still had another car to race, the red 15r Street Stock. He finished seventh in his first heat. Then in heat two, he crossed the finish line in sixth place.
On Saturday night, Westover finished the feature with an 18th place.
I spoke with him on Friday and Westover commented on how he liked coming to Ogilvie, noting it is a “fun track to race at.”
Carter Kinnear made his first trip to the Topless Nationals with his Midwest Modified, hoping for some time in the seat and learning the set up on his new car.
On Friday, Kinnear’s #23 finished in eighth place for heat one. Heat two then saw Carter cross the finish line in ninth place.
On Saturday night, Carter developed a technical issue which saw him receive a DNF yet he finished 14th.
Unfortunately, the young man didn’t qualify for the final feature of Saturday night.
When I spoke with Kinnear after the races about his experience, he stated that “everything seemed very professional. The track was fun to race on.”
He also noted that they would be back to race the 11th Topless and hopefully a few times before.
Meanwhile, #55 Tyler Wilson made the trip again this year to race in the 10th Topless Nationals. He was all ready for the Friday night double heat action.
Wilson’s first heat saw him cross the finish line with fifth place, while heat 2 brought him a finish of eighth.
When I spoke with Wilson he said, “We’ve made some changes for Saturday night. We’ll see how that works.”
Saturday night’s feature saw Wilson start in the 22nd position but finish 13th out of 25. The yellow #55 is sponsored by Brett-Will Towing, K & M Trucking, Williamson Timber and Ray Venerus Trucking.
And finally, Jeff Davis brought his Modified #85 to the Ogilvie Raceway to yet again take part in the Topless Nationals.
In heat one of Friday night, Jeff finished in eighth place.
Heat 2 was more exciting. Davis took the lead for a few laps finishing with a fourth place. And on Saturday night, Jeff finished 17th out of 24 cars.
At the end of the weekend, our seven local drivers–along with their family and friends–enjoyed warm, beautiful weather during the day and bundled up for a colder evening of full on racing action.
