The St. Francis Sentinels captured gold at the Crossroads Invitational girls’ basketball tournament on Saturday with a 15-11 win over Riverview in the final.
Head coach Mike Krueger said the win was a total team effort, specifically pointing to their defensive work.
The Sentinels opened play with a 7-2 win over the hosts from Crossroads, followed that with a 6-2 victory over Robert Moore, and then edged Riverview 11-8 in the first of two meetings with the Rainy River school.
The Sentinels suffered their only blemish of the tournament in their next game—a 10-10 tie against Sturgeon Creek—before wrapping up the round-robin portion with a 16-8 win over Mine Centre to finish first and claim the bye to the final.
Riverview advanced to face the Sentinels a second time with a thrilling 20-18 semi-final victory over Sturgeon Creek.
