Although the Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team dropped its fourth-straight NorWOSSA match here last Thursday afternoon, the players found solace in the fact they stole a point from the front-running Dryden Eagles.
After getting blitzed 15-3 in the first game, the Muskies stormed back to win an exciting 15-13 decision in the second one–earning their first point of the season.
The black-and-gold also made it close in the rubber game, battling back to within 13-10 before falling 15-10.
Still, the senior girls feel picking up their first point (they had been swept 3-0 in their first three matches) may be a sign of things to come.
“[This puts our confidence] way up,” veteran Caylee Brow said. “We feel more confident playing with each other now, and everybody is working hard together.”
Brow said communication between the players on the court was the difference in the second game, which the Muskies led 3-0 and then 12-6.
“How we play at the start is very important,” said Mike Shute, in his first year as co-coach of the squad.
“Dryden is the toughest team in the league so we seem to have to get points off them right off the bat because we have a hard time coming back,” he noted.
The coaches also pointed to the blocking of Karen Harris and the serving of Sarah Vanderplaats as being the keys to winning that second game.
Meanwhile, the Muskie junior girls’ volleyball team picked up its fourth-straight win to start the season, taking two out of three games from the Eagles by scores of 15-9, 11-15, and 15-6.
The Muskies have earned two points in all four of their games to sit atop the NorWOSSA standings with eight.
“We want to win all three games but we seem to play up-and-down volleyball,” said head coach Struchan Gilson.
But Gilson also said he continued to allow all of his players to see court time in the first two games before putting his “top six veterans” on the floor for the third one.
Gilson praised the hitting and serving of Marsha Walsh, and the blocking of Siobhan Devlin, as the highlights in the win.
Both teams won’t see their next NorWOSSA action until Feb. 3 when they travel to Kenora.
