Senior spikers keep on winning

The Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team recorded their second-straight sweep in NorWOSSA play after downing the Dryden Eagles 25-19, 25-13, and 25-22 there yesterday.
Head coach Rick Wiedenhoeft said he was pleased with his team’s play as they solidified their hold on first place.
“It was not too bad,” he noted afterwards. “We came out strong in the first match and we continued to serve [well].
“[The offence] is getting crisper, we’re getting much better on the attack,” he added.
The Muskies also had strong games from veteran setter Laureen Cousineau, Dusty Yeo, and Marsha Walsh.
But Wiedenhoeft was cautious to predict this team becoming a powerhouse in NorWOSSA. In fact, he downplayed their winning streak.
“I don’t know if we’re on a roll,” the veteran head coach said. “We’ll save the roll for the end but it was a good team effort [because] it’s always tough to win in Dryden.”
Meanwhile, the junior Muskies continue to get better, taking the first-place Dryden Eagles to a deciding game yesterday before losing it 15-13 to drop the best-of-five match 3-2.
The black-and-gold had fought back from a 2-0 deficit, losing the first two games 25-15 and 25-21 before taking the next two by scores of 25-21 and 25-16.
Co-coach Duane Roen said he was pleased with his team’s effort, and the fact they battled back against a strong Dryden squad in their own gym.
“We’re getting better,” Roen said afterwards. “They seem to have the attitude that they don’t get down on themselves and they are starting to work as a team.”
The Muskies, who struggled in the early part of the season, have started to pick up the offensive part of their game of late. And Roen said they appear to have closed the gap between themselves and the front-running Eagles.
“The serving is getting better and they’re getting much better on offence,” he noted. “To take two games from them up there shows they are beatable.”
Linda Zimmerman, one of the team’s top players, played sparingly yesterday while battling the ’flu. To help pick of the slack, Roen said they got big games from power hitter Jessica Wilson, setter Jamie Whitecrow, and Ashley McFarland.
