Senior spikers eke out win

It took some doing but both the Muskie girls’ volleyball teams beat the Dryden Eagles here yesterday afternoon.
The seniors went the distance in their best-of-five match, winning the fifth and deciding game by a narrow 15-13 margin to improve to 4-0 in NorWOSSA play at the midway point.
After Dryden took the first game 25-20, the black-and-gold fought back to win the next two 25-21 and 25-12. But the Eagles would not fold, winning the fourth game 25-22 to force the rubber.
“We are a far better team than that,” remarked head coach Adrian Chapman. “We had some flashes of brilliance. [The team] played well but they didn’t play excellent like they usually do.”
In junior action, the Muskies won the first two games 25-15 and 25-16. Then after falling 25-20 in the third one, the black-and-gold nailed down the victory with a 25-18 triumph in the fourth game.
The juniors now sport a 3-1 record.
“They are doing some good things . . . not a lot of good things but some good things,” head coach Struchan Gilson had remarked during the match.
But his tune changed a bit by the end, enthusing that his team played very well.
“[I am] very pleased. The rookies played well, along with veteran Trisha Smith,” he noted. “We had some nice hits for the first time–we actually made some hits.”
He also said the team’s passing and serving had improved.
Both volleyball teams resume NorWOSSA action Feb. 1 back here against Dryden again.
