Senior hoopters dunk Saints in season-opener

While it isn’t exactly regular NorWOSSA play, the Muskie senior girls’ basketball team opened their season here last Wednesday with a 49-31 victory over the Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora).
“Considering it was their first game, I am happy with how they played,” head coach Paul Noonan enthused.
Noonan said his team’s defensive skills were strong but the offence was a little rough around the edges. He also noted they’ve practised working on their zone defence.
“All of that will come with time and practice I hope. We just have to build [the skills] from there,” he remarked.
“[Muskie captain] Sarah Noonan did a good job taking control and handling the ball,” he continued. “And Linda Zimmerman played very well in Wednesday’s game considering she is a first-year senior.”
The Muskies had jumped out to a commanding 27-13 lead in the first half, paced by Noonan’s eight points and six more from Zimmerman.
Chrissy Thomson had four points and Sibhon Devlin netted three, with Jamie Whitecrow, Nicole Jewell, and Carling Barton scoring two points.
The Saints picked up steam in the second half, scoring 18 points, but the Muskies had 22 to ice the victory.
Noonan once again led the way for the black-and-gold with six points along with Danielle McGee. Devlin was next with four points, followed by Thomson, Kelly Crawford, and Heather Mihichuk with two each.
Unfortunately, the senior squad doesn’t have any more games scheduled as of now.
“All in all, we have a good squad this year and that is disappointing because we don’t have a regular-season scheduled,” said Noonan, who added he’s looking for a rematch with Thomas Aquinas up in Kenora.
“[Scheduling more games] is something I will get more aggressive about,” he pledged.
