Senior hoopsters take third

The Muskie senior boys’ basketball team took third place in a seven-team tournament at Churchill High School in Winnipeg last weekend.
“We were supposed to have played a tournament in Thunder Bay at the end of the month but it was cancelled,” noted Muskie head coach Paul Noonan.
“[Fort High athletic director] Darren Johnson scrambled to find us this one,” he added.
The black-and-gold won two of their three games, beating Louis Riel 62-59 in the first but then falling 68-63 to Dauphin in a tight game.
“It was a tie game in the last 30 seconds,” recalled Noonan.
Then in the game to determine third place, the Muskies prevailed 87-74 over host Churchill.
Kevin Gemmell led Fort High with 36 points during the weekend and was named to the tournament all-star team. “I think he’d have been the MVP if we had gotten to the final,” said Noonan.
Three other Muskies scored in double-digits over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the Muskie junior girls’ volleyball team headed up to Dryden last weekend for the 12-team Sweetheart tournament, returning home with top honours after sporting a 5-1 record.
Finally, the junior boys’ basketball team took part in the Kenora Invitational Tournament at Beaver Brae last weekend, losing to the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora) 66-44 before beating Dryden 43-40 in the ‘D’ final.
