Senior hoopsters advance to NWOSSAA

The Muskie court teams failed to repeat last year’s sweep of NorWOSSA gold Friday in Kenora, but all four teams did reach their respective finals—with two earning gold.
The senior boys’ earned their third-straight NorWOSSA basketball title with a 54-44 win over the host Broncos in final. Jamie Algie and Jock Gemmell sparked a 15-4 run in the third quarter to erase a 29-27 halftime deficit.
Gemmell led the way with 17 points while Algie chipped in 16.
“Just after half, we started playing better defence and didn’t miss so much of our chances,” said Algie, who combined with Gemmell for 13 of those 15 third-quarter points.
The boys will face the Thunder Bay champs in the best-of-three NWOSSAA final here Friday and Saturday. The Hillcrest Colts play the Hammarskjold Vikings in their final tonight.
Meanwhile, the Muskie junior girls’ volleyball team upset the first-place Dryden Eagles 3-1 in their best-of-five final, losing 25-14 in the opener before rebounding with 25-17, 25-15, and 25-15 wins to earn their sixth title in seven years.
They had upended Kenora 3-1 in the semi-final earlier Friday, winning the first two sets 25-14 and 25-16, losing the third 25-12, then icing the victory with a 25-17 win.
The Muskie senior girls also began defence of their NorWOSSA gold by beating Kenora 3-1 in the semi-final, winning the first set 25-14, losing the second 25-21, but taking the next two 25-16 and 25-14.
But they were swept by the undefeated Eagles in the final, falling 25-22, 25-23, and 25-13.
And in junior boys’ basketball action, Scott Bridgeman scored nine points while Andrew Mueller added five to lead the Muskies to a 37-29 victory over Kenora in the semi-final.
But they fell 54-39 to the first-place Eagles in the final.
Mark Buist scored nine in that game to pace the Muskies, with Scott Galusha adding eight.
“We had guys step up in the first game that I’m glad showed up. We came to play ball,” said junior boys head coach Greg Ste. Croix. “We just got beat by a better ball club [in the final].”
