The Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team travelled to Kenora over the weekend for the “Winter Blast 2008” tournament and faced stiff competition all day during the round-robin—gaining only one win in eight sets.
This sent the Muskies to the ‘B’-side, where they defeated the Red Lake Rams in two sets in the quarter-finals.
The black-and-gold then squared off against Hammarskjold, who they had lost both sets to on Friday.
The girls struggled early in the first set, losing 25-23. But they battled back to crush the Vikings 25-7 in the second set and then cruised to an easy 15-11 win in the third-and-deciding one for the ‘B’-side crown.
The Muskies had opened round-robin play against Westgate, losing both sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-22. More tough matches followed, with losses to Dryden (25-14 and 25-8) and Hammarskjold (25-19 and 25-23).
The tide was stemmed against St. Thomas Aquinas as Fort High lost the first set 25-19 but won the second one 25-23.
Placing fifth out of five, the girls played a relegation match against the Red Lake Rams, winning 25-14 and 25-21, before facing off against Hammarskjold to take the consolation bracket.
