Heading into the NorWOSSA playoffs yesterday in Kenora, not many gave the third-place Muskie senior girls’ basketball team much of a chance of taking the league crown.
But the squad proved their doubters wrong—capturing the gold medal with a 32-22 upset over the top-ranked Dryden Eagles in the final.
The Muskies began their quest for their first league title since 2009 with a 32-20 victory over the host Broncos in the semi-final earlier yesterday.
The black-and-gold now will prepare for the NWOSSAA championships next weekend in Thunder Bay, with a berth to the all-Ontarios on the line.
Their opponent is still to be determined, though, as the Hammarskjold Vikings and St. Ignatius Falcons battle it out for their league title starting Monday.
The Muskie junior girls’ hoopsters, meanwhile, fell short in their quest to repeat as league champs yesterday as the regular-season leaders dropped a 35-31 decision to the host Broncos in the final.
In boys’ volleyball play, the Muskie senior squad pushed the perennially-strong Dryden Eagles to the limit in yesterday’s final but wound up losing in five sets (16-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-19, and 9-15).
The Muskies had advanced to the final after a three-set sweep of the Broncos (25-7, 27-25, and 26-24) in the semi-final earlier in the day.
And the junior spikers saw their season come to an early end in the semi-final against Kenora, which the hosts won an exciting five-set affair (20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-9, and 9-15).
Dryden went on to capture the league crown later the afternoon in four sets.
