Couchiching had everything it wanted–momentum, home crowd support, and a chance to win hockey gold.
The Borderland Selects took it all away.
Borderland beat Couchiching 5-1 on Sunday in the Bantam division final of the fourth-annual Chuck McPherson Youth Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Couchiching Arena.
Jarren Mullner scored the first Selects’ goal, then added an assist on another by Cole Magill.
Blake Ferris and Carson Noga tallied in the second, with Noga getting another in the third.
Mike Ward had the lone goal for Couchiching.
The Selects pulled out a 3-2 win in their opener over Couchiching.
Noga, Kolby Kravise, and Jaxon Germain scored for Borderland, with Reed Bodnar and Ward replying for Couchiching.
The Selects then edged Hockey Monkey 2-1.
The goal scorers were unavailable for Borderland while Ashton Cousineau had the only goal for Hockey Monkey.
Couchiching, meanwhile, caged Hockey Monkey 8-1 in the round-robin.
Kaden Kocuiba, Bodnar, and Ward all scored twice in that one, with Anthony Bruyere and Ayden Gushulak adding singles.
Jace Dittaro had the lone tally for Hockey Monkey.
Couchiching and Hockey Monkey faced off again in the semi-finals, with Couchiching earning a 6-2 win.
Ward lit the lamp twice, with Jesse Jourdain, Kocuiba, Bodnar, and Gushulak getting one each.
Brandon Croswell and Andrew Kehl replied for Hockey Monkey.
