The 24th-annual men’s Boxing Day tournament here saw its largest field of 22 players partake in the one-day “turkey burn.”
Play always starts off slow in the morning, then heats up by the end of the day.
In the ‘A’ division, a very focused junior, Anniss Seid, blasted his way to the tourney title without losing a single game—reeling off four-straight victories by scores of 3-0 over Jason Kellar, Mark Faragher, and Jason Kabel.
Seid then dispatched Colin Drombolis in the final, making the 18-year-old the youngest winner ever of the tournament.
‘B’ champ Bob Tkachuk lost his first match to Ryan Brady, then nailed down victories over Shawn Brady and James Boileau before sweeping Dave Schwartz 3-0 in the final.
Brady, meanwhile, took the long route to the ‘C’ crown in the “rat race” division.
After defeating Tkachuk, he lost to Toby Munro and Josh Councillor. But he rebounded with wins over Chris Faragher and his brother, Shawn, to win the title.
Next up for the Sunset Country Squash Club is the Subway junior tournament slated for Jan. 6-8 in Winnipeg.
