Sad news hits Lakers’ family

Tragic news has struck the Fort Frances Lakers’ family and organization.
The passing of assistant coach, friend, and mentor Bob Mainville has brought heartache to all who knew this great man.
Bob will be forever remembered for his caring way, quick wit, and fun-loving spirit, and to me as the guy who kept me calm and focused.
He will be missed by all.
The Lakers and I send all of our thoughts and prayers to Bob’s family.

We also would like to thank all who supported our food booth on July 1. It was a great day to take in the celebration of Canada Day.
Many people came through the tent to help out in the fundraiser.
The Lakers’ board of directors thanks all who volunteered their time to make this a successful day. We also thank all the sponsors and donations from the great people and businesses of our community.
A big thanks to M&M Meats for all their help.

Meanwhile, we continue to chug ahead with plans for a golf tourney at Heron Landing scheduled for this Saturday (July 10).
Come for a chance to win $25,000 for a hole-in-one (sponsored by Sunset Country Ford).
It should be a great day of fun, and a great opportunity to celebrate the life of Bob Mainville with the Lakers’ family.
Call the pro shop at 274-5678 to get your foursome entered.
In related news, a pancake breakfast is planned for Saturday (July 10) from 8:45-11 a.m. at the Couchiching multi-use building. This will be a great chance for people to have a good hearty start to the day.
The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

This is a great chance for players to showcase their talents to the Lakers’ staff.

We are continuing to sell season tickets as well as “400 Club” tickets.
You can get these tickets by contacting a Lakers’ board member. Both are great deals and an opportunity to support your local SIJHL team.

A month-and-a-half before main training camp, the SIJHL needs the help of our fans to assist in the appeals process for the two American expansion teams that are trying to play in our league for the 2010/11 season.
We need you to e-mail Peter Lindberg of USA Hockey and let him know why these two teams are important to the future of the SIJHL.

Finally, the Lakers’ family sends our congratulations to Fort Frances native Joe Basaraba on being drafted 69th overall by the Florida Panthers of the NHL.
We wish Joe the best of luck at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and with his goal of one day playing for the Panthers’ organization.
I’ve had the pleasure of coaching this young man. He has an abundance of talent and is a pleasure to know as a person.
