Sabres to get signs, fee breaks

Fort Frances Jr. Sabres will see signage promoting the team at the east and west entrances to town, as well as receive special financial considerations at the Memorial Sports Centre, following the approval by council Monday night of a slate of proposals put forth by the team.
The proposals, which Sabres’ owner/president Carolyn Kellaway and vice-president Nancy Gardiman put forth to town council back on Aug. 27, were passed following the submission of a report from the Community Services executive committee last week.
Kellaway said yesterday morning that she “hasn’t been contacted by anyone as of yet.”
But in a statement submitted to town council prior to their proposal, she had said adopting their suggestions “will go a long way in helping the Fort Frances Jr. Sabres extend and consolidate their feeling of ambassadorship in and towards the community and district at large.”
In addition to the installation of new signage (which, according to the report by Community Services manager George Bell, “the town would be happy to install” so long as the costs of the signs were shared between the town and the team), the Sabres also will be charged youth residential rates for ice fees and receive a discount to pool/fitness centre memberships for players through to April 15, 2008.
One request the town did not approve was a proposed revenue-sharing system in which the team would reap some of the financial rewards from Carol’s Canteen, which provides refreshments to fans during games.
However, the report did leave the door open to revenue-sharing with Carol’s Canteen pending the team obtaining a liquor licence for beer gardens to be hosted in conjunction with home games.
Carol’s Canteen possibly could provide food services to the beer gardens in that situation, but a meeting would be held after a licence was obtained to pin down any details.
