Sabres to devote Devoe memorial on Friday

FORT FRANCES—The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres will devote a memorial to Bryce Devoe, a local youth who was killed by lightning in late May, before their first pre-season game this Friday.
The dedication will take place at 4:30 p.m. outside the Memorial Sports Centre, where a tree and plaque will be planted in Devoe’s memory.
A short ceremony also will be held before the game against the Dryden Ice Dogs, which begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Sabres also will wear Devoe’s number 10, which he wore in hockey, on their helmets during the season as previously announced.
Sabres’ vice-president Nancy Gardiman had said earlier this summer that when she and team president Carolyn Kellaway read about Devoe’s death, “it affected our families tremendously in Thunder Bay. . . . Both Carolyn and I have 13-year-old boys here who play hockey.”
Devoe, who was 13 when he passed away May 30, was a devoted young athlete who loved to play hockey, soccer, and other sports.
The Sabres will play another exhibition game Saturday night in Dryden, then round out pre-season action with a showdown back here Sunday at 2:15 p.m. against the Fort William North Stars.
The SIJHL’s newest squad will open the regular-season next Friday (Sept. 14) at 7:30 p.m. when the Thunder Bay Bulldogs come to town.
