The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres will begin their on-ice operations with the opening of training camp tomorrow.
Twenty-four skaters and seven goalies have confirmed their attendance, and that doesn’t include any local players who are hoping to suit up for the team.
Registration for anyone interested in trying out will be held tomorrow (Sept. 2) at 1 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre, with the cost being $60 to cover ice fees.
An opening practice then will take place from 2:15-3:45 p.m.
The Sabres will host the Sioux Lookout Flyers in an exhibition game this Saturday (Sept. 5) at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Admission will be $5.
In related news, a season-ticket sales drive is ongoing this week to try to resurrect the franchise after its original owners, Scott and Carolyn Kellaway, pulled the plug after two seasons in the SIJHL.
Season tickets can be purchased today through Thursday (Sept. 1-3) from 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre lobby.
They cost $220 for adults, $170 for seniors, and $110 for students (aged five and older).
For further ticket inquiries, Sabres’ head coach Wayne Strachan can be reached at 274-4383.
Organizers are hoping to drum up at least 100 confirmed season-ticket holders for the 2009-10 season by the end of the drive.
Meanwhile, another meeting will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena conference room to assign a board of directors and move forward with plans to operate the team as a not-for-profit, community-run entity.
