The outcome was the same, but the margin of victory was much closer than expected.
The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres (14-8-1) got two goals from Colton Kennedy en route to a 3-1 win over the Sioux Lookout Flyers 3-1 last night in the first of a five-game road swing.
The Sabres are now 5-0 against the expansion Flyers (0-21-1), with a goal-differential of 32-6 in those five meetings. But last night’s result was the closest between the two teams so far.
Kyle Ruhl made his second-straight start in goal for the Sabres, stopping 11 of the 12 shots he faced.
Kennedy scored the lone goal of the first period on a power play, assisted by linemates Chris Sinclair and Brendan Baumgartner.
The teams then traded goals in the second, with Dan Usiski netting his second in as many games while Brad Bienvenu got his first of the season for the host Flyers.
Kennedy rounded out the scoring with the only marker of the third, with assists again going to his current linemates.
With the win, the Sabres moved even with the Schreiber Diesels for second place in the SIJHL standings with 29 points.
The Thunder Bay Bearcats are one point back in fourth, with one game in hand, while the Dryden Ice Dogs sit fifth with 24 points, followed by the winless Flyers.
The Fort William North Stars lead the SIJHL with 33 points.
The Sabres and Flyers meet again tomorrow night, with the Sabres then coming home for a few days of practice before heading back out for a big two-game set with the Diesels on Dec. 12-13.
In related news, Fort Frances native Tyler Miller is expected to suit up for the Bearcats against the North Stars tonight in his first SIJHL action since being traded from the Port Hope Predators of the OPJHL earlier this week.
