Sabres nip Bearcats

A pair of local players helped propel the Fort Frances Jr. Sabres to a narrow 4-3 victory over the host Thunder Bay Bearcats last night.
Kyle Turgeon notched a goal and two assists while linemate Mitch Cain added three assists to give the Sabres their first victory over the second-place Bearcats in four tries since the Christmas break.
Dan Usiski opened the scoring for the Sabres in the first period, but Brooks Mejia replied for the Bearcats.
Chris Kitt gave the Bearcats their first lead at 9:01 of the second, but Graham Dyck and Colton Kennedy netted goals to give the Sabres a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Turgeon scored an insurance goal midway through the final frame, which proved to be key as Kitt tallied his second of the game less than four minutes later to close the gap to one again.
But that would be as close as the Bearcats could get
The two teams were whistled for just seven minor penalties before Dyck and the Bearcats’ Brad Pawlowski squared off in a fight with just three seconds to play.
Ryan Faragher stopped 42 of the 45 shots he faced, improving the Sabres’ record to 25-15-3 while the Bearcats fell to 29-9-5.
The Sabres next head to Sioux Lookout for a clash with the last-place Flyers tomorrow night before returning home to close out the SIJHL regular season with six-straight home games starting Tuesday (Feb. 24) against the Dryden Ice Dogs.
