The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres managed one win in three tries last week against two of the top teams in the SIJHL to close out the first half of the season.
After falling 5-2 on Wednesday in Dryden to the Ice Dogs (22-8-0-1), the Sabres (9-14-3-3) split a two-game road series with the Thunder Bay Bearcats (20-9-0-0), winning 6-3 on Friday night before falling 7-4 on Saturday.
The Sabres, who have dropped all seven games against the Ice Dogs in their short history, got on the scoreboard first thanks to a power-play goal by Chad Reynolds.
But Dryden turned the tide quickly with five unanswered tallies before Mike Ainsworth closed out the scoring with a late goal.
Things turned around Friday night in Thunder Bay when Quinn Amiel had a pair of goals to pace the Sabres to victory over the Bearcats. Mitch Cain, Chris Sinclair, Alessio Tomassetti, and Tyler Hodges added singles.
Ainsworth, Tomassetti, Reynolds, and Amiel were the goal-scorers in Saturday’s loss.
David Novak won Friday night’s game, stopping 28 shots, while Ryan Faragher was between the pipes for both losses.
