Sabres lose to Ice Dogs


The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres jumped out to an early lead but couldn’t hold on, losing 3-2 in overtime to the host Dryden Ice Dogs in SIJHL action last night.
The Ice Dogs (16-19-5) erased a two-goal deficit with less than five minutes to go, scoring twice in a 27-second span to send the game to overtime.
Kevin Tomalty then was the hero in the extra period, giving the Ice Dogs their first home-ice win since before Christmas.
Kevin Burton and Tanner Harms netted the two third-period goals for the ‘Dogs while Dan Usiski and Kalib Thunderchief had first-period markers for the Sabres.
Newcomer Colin Moberly, who began the season with the Thunder Bay Bearcats, picked up an assist on Thunderchief’s goal in his first game with the team.
The Sabres (23-13-3) next clash with the Bearcats this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.
In related news, the Bearcats sent a message to the league-leading Fort William North Stars with a narrow 3-2 win last night.
Fort Frances native Brian White scored the eventual game-winning goal on a power play in the third period.
