Time to drop the puck.
The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres kick-off their exhibition schedule when they welcome the visiting Wisconsin Mustangs to the Ice for Kids Arena tonight, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The team has been working hard on and off the ice since the conclusion of the tryout camp over a week ago.
Head coach Wayne Strachan and his staff will look to this game and two more exhibition games (versus Fort William Sept. 5 and Dryden Sept. 13) as final tune-ups before the SIJHL season begins for real Sept. 19 when the Sabres host the Thunder Bay Bulldogs.
The Sabres finished their inaugural season with a 22-21-4-3 record and were ousted in the first round of the playoffs by the Schreiber Diesels.
Last year’s leading scorer, Quinn Amiel, will not be back with the club, having signed with the Oklahoma City Blazers of the Central Hockey League.
But the team assembled this year looks to have more depth at key positions and looks to improve on last season’s record.
There are currently 19 players signed (11 returnees) to the roster for the upcoming season, and these next three games will decide which players will fill out the remainder of the team’s roster.
Here’s a list of new players so far signed for this season with possibly a few more still in camp hoping to get signed as well:
• Patrick Bobczynski
• Gabe Capozzi
• Taylor Jorgenson
• Riley Ferster
• Ryan Widmar
• Dan Smith
• Shawn Fulton
• Dan Usiski
The Sabres’ regular season schedule features 50 games, and wraps up on March 6 when they play host the Schreiber Diesels at the Ice for Kids Arena.
