The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres came away from their Dec. 1 roster deadline with forward Steven Sus joining the team from the Beausejour Blades.
Sus was acquired in exchange for future considerations from the MJHL team, where the 20-year-old former Muskie and Borderland Thunder player compiled two goals and five assists—along with six minutes in penalties—over 31 games.
Sabres’ head coach and general manager Wayne Strachan said that while Sus wasn’t getting much ice time in Beausejour, he’ll “make an immediate impact and play on one of the top lines” with the Sabres.
“He brings leadership, he brings a lot of smarts and savvy to the on-ice play, and it’s what the team needed—a 20-year-old who can come in and lead.
“Lead us not only by example but in the locker-room, too,” Strachan added.
Many local hockey fans will remember Sus’ stints with the Muskies and Borderland Thunder. He netted 13 goals and 10 assists in the Thunder’s last operating season in 2004-05, along with a goal in the SIJHL playoffs.
The year before that, Sus won his second-consecutive Barney Maher Trophy for most valuable player and his place in Muskie history after scoring more than 90 points in 55 games.
The deal was just one of many made at the deadline by Strachan to improve the fifth-place Sabres (6-12-3-3), but others are yet to be finalized by the teams involved.
Strachan said all players involved in deadline deals with the Sabres will be in town for the team’s upcoming homestand against the Schreiber Diesels.
