Sabres earn weekend split

The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres split their weekend series with the Fort William North Stars, winning 3-1 on Friday night before falling 5-3 on Saturday.
The North Stars, one of the SIJHL’s perennial powerhouses, have slumped as of late—losing four of their last eight games and slipping to third place in the standings.
Sabres’ head coach Wayne Strachan had said the week before he had hoped to “steal” a game from the North Stars—a team ranked in the CJAHL’s top 15 nationwide and one that had beaten the Sabres in each of their previous matches.
Friday’s win was led by left-winger Quinn Amiel, who scored the first and third goals, sandwiching one from Brendan Baumgartner. Alessio Tomassetti added three assists.
The Sabres only managed 10 shots on the night, but made enough of them count, including an empty-netter by Amiel to seal the victory.
The same goal production simply wasn’t enough the following night as the North Stars got on the board first with Fort Frances trying to catch up.
Tomassetti and Matthew York each netted a goal and an assist, with Chad Reynolds scoring the other goal.
Ryan Faragher was in goal for both contests, turning aside 39 shots on Saturday and 20 of 21 on Friday night.
The Sabres next host the Schreiber Diesels for a weekend series before embarking on another six-game road trip.
