Tracy Cain doesn’t know the meaning of the word quit. As a matter of fact, it’s not even in her vocabulary anymore.
Gone, forgotten, never to be referred to again.
A year ago, Cain, 38, was inactive and unhappy with her weight. Fast-forward to today—and the results are night and day.
Not only has Cain dropped 75 pounds over the last 12 months, but she also competed in her first half-marathon in Fargo, N.D. over the Victoria Day long weekend, coming in with a time of 2:11:06 (an average mile speed of 10 minutes flat).
Impressive numbers for any person—let alone someone competing in their first half-marathon.
So what’s her secret?
“Weight Watchers and the tremendous support from friends, family, Jackie [Lampi-Hughes], and everybody else at the gym [Energy Fitness],” Cain beamed.
Cain is a single mother to her son, Garrett, nine, and felt she needed to shape up to be there for him and improve her own life.
“I was just tired of the way I was,” she remarked. “The lack of energy, no motivation, I needed a change.”
And change she did.
“Tracy lost all that weight and she was just thrilled to finish,” said fellow marathoner Connee Badiuk, who competed in the full marathon in Fargo with a time that qualified her for the Boston Marathon.
“It’s just so inspirational for me to see that,” Badiuk added.
Cain does shift work at the OSB mill in Barwick, so long days at work mean she can’t have excuses on her off days not to exercise.
“I want to do it [Fargo Marathon] again next year,” she enthused.
“It’s hard to plan anything this summer with my son out of school, and it was a lot of planning just to do this one, but I do want to run more in the future.”
Somehow this seems like only the tip of iceberg for Cain and her continued weight loss and fitness goals.
