In a tight Rainy River District Fastball League all-star game, Team One used a two-run fifth inning to nip Team Two 6-4 Thursday night at Big Grassy First Nation.
Will Handorgan (Big Island) earned game MVP honours for Team One after getting two key lead-off hits in the bottom of the third- and fifth-inning.
He also scored the team’s only run in the second inning. Teammate Guy Arpin (Rainy River) opened scoring with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first inning. Don Gall (Rainy River) and Kyle Langlais (Pinewood) each added a homerun for the winning side.
Bob Andy (Big Grassy) earned the win while Murray Armstrong (Rainy River) took the loss for Team Two, who had taken a 2-0 lead after scores by Vaughn Wilson (Barwick) and Giz Jack (Big Grassy) in the top of the first.
They added runs in the top of the fourth and sixth.
Gus Lindberg and Kingsly Downs were umpired the game, which was played under fine conditions at the Big Grassy diamond, said RRDFL president George Oltsher, who managed Team One against Carl Big George and Team Two.
Jack won MVP honours for Team Two.
“It was tough getting all the teams together because everyone had a lot of other commitments,” said Team Two player and Barwick Blue Knights regular Tyler Gamsby. “Everything went OK, though.”
In reported league play, the Bulldogs improved their record to 7-8 on the year after beating Pinewood 14-5 last Tuesday. Rainy River still leads the standings with a 14-2-1 record after typing Barwick 6-6 last week.
The regular season will wind down on Aug. 6 with playoffs beginning two days later.
