The Rainy River Community College Voyageurs’ women’s volleyball team is experiencing some lean times of late.
With former Muskie Chelsea Kabatay in the lineup, RRCC first fell 3-1 to the host Hibbing Cardinal (25-14, 25-15, 17-25, and 25-23) in MCAC action back on Sept. 13.
Kabatay supplied four kills and one block in the loss.
“Chelsea did another nice job in the front row,” lauded Voyageurs’ head coach Mel Millerbernd.
Then on Sept. 15, RRCC went tooth-and-nail with the visiting Itasca Vikings (Grand Rapids).
After dropping the first two sets, RRCC fought back to tie the match–only to have it slip away in the fifth for a 3-2 loss (25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 21-25, and 15-7).
Kabatay had an even better match against Itasca, racking up 10 kills.
This past week wasn’t much better, although RRCC did sweep the Vermilion Ironwomen 3-0 (25-6, 25-10, and 25-10) last Wednesday on home court.
Kabatay was 10-for-11 in serve attempts and also had two kills in that match.
But the opposition got decidedly tougher as the Voyageurs hit the road to face the top two teams in the standings.
First it was the Northland Pioneers of Thief River Falls sweeping to a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-13, and 25-17).
Kabatay had four kills in that one.
Then the Central Lakes Raiders of Brainerd earned a 3-0 win over RRCC (25-18, 25-16, and 25-17).
Kabatay came up with just one kill as RRCC dropped to 2-5 in the North Division of the MCAC and 5-9 overall.
On deck is a matchup with the Mesabi Range Lady Norse (Virginia) at the RRCC gym tonight at 6:30 p.m.
The team then heads to Virginia this weekend to face the Gogebic Lady Samsons (Ironwood) on Friday and Hibbing on Saturday.
