Fort Frances curler Raymond Roy fell short of a berth in the final at the Dominion Curling Club Championships provincial playdowns in New Liskeard over the weekend, finishing in a tie for third with Alain Leduc (Espanola) with a 3-2 record in the round-robin.
Russ Mellerup (Thunder Bay) captured the title with a convincing 7-0 win over Tom Leonard (Sudbury) in six ends yesterday morning.
Roy and his rink, which included third Mark Broman, second Butch Wensley, and lead Patrick Briere, fell 5-3 to Mellerup in their opening game Friday afternoon, but bounced back with a 8-4 triumph over Leduc that night.
Roy was edged 7-6 by Leonard on Saturday morning, but rebounded with a 6-3 win over Matti Lehtisaari (Kapuskasing) that afternoon.
Then they wrapped up round-robin play with a 9-5 triumph over Dave Barker (Geraldton) on Saturday night.
But the local foursome saw their playoff hopes dash when Mellerup beat Lehtisaari 11-7.
Mellerup and Geraldton’s Karen Saarimaki, who won the women’s title yesterday over Meri Bolander (Copper Cliff), will represent Northern Ontario at the 2012 Dominion Curling Club Championships, which will be held Nov. 19-24 in Scarborough.
