It was an excellent weekend for local club curlers at the regional club playdowns in Sioux Lookout over the weekend
Raymond Roy and his rink qualified for the men’s provincial championship after posting a 4-1 record.
Roy and his rink of Dave Broman, Butch Wensley, and Patrick Briere easily won their four games while dropping only a 7-6 decision to host Sioux Lookout.
Meanwhile, Kim Beaudry and her rink of third Kelly Wagar, second Teresa McFayden, and lead Jeannie Sheppard went undefeated in their three games to advance out of Region 1.
The provincial championships are slated April 8-11 in Port Arthur.
Roy opened play with a 6-1 victory over Atikokan’s Arlo Jewell, then beat Greg Shields (Kenora) 7-4 on Friday evening.
The locals improved to 3-0 on Saturday morning with a 10-2 romp over Bryan Bonot (Stratton), but then blew a 6-2 lead to John Cummine (Sioux Lookout) that afternoon to suffer their lone loss.
The Roy rink rebounded in their final game, knocking off Randy Baird (Keewatin) by an 8-2 count.
With a 4-1 record, all the team could do was wait for the outcome of the Cummine-Shields match Sunday morning.
But Shields played spoiler, knocking off Cummine 6-4 to hand the provincial berth to Roy.
In ladies’ action, Beaudry opened with a 10-3 smashing of Val Stus (Atikokan) and then an 11-3 rout over Carol George (Sioux Lookout).
The final match with Crystal Wojtowicz (Kenora) was set to decide the winner of the provincial berth, which Beaudry won 5-3.
