It was a night for superstars and super rookies alike.
Mary Waghorn tallied twice as the Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes edged the Shear Serenity Strykers 4-3 in Borderland Women’s Indoor Soccer League action last night at Fort High.
Waghorn scored back-to-back in the first half for the first-place Rockettes (6-1) after Becky Selman had staked the Strykers (1-5-1) to a 1-0 lead.
Then a pair of league rookies went head-to-head just before halftime.
Carmen Atatise of the Rockettes’ rifled home her first-ever goal in league play for a 3-1 lead past valiant Strykers’ keeper Jen Singleton, who was making her league debut last night.
Jaymee Fiset, who leads Shear Serenity in scoring, did her best to keep her team in the game with a pair of second-half breakaway goals.
But in between, the league’s most dangerous sniper this season struck for the game-winner.
Maggie Jean came off the left wall and cut to the middle before ripping a low shot home with 10 minutes left in regulation time for her league-leading 15th to secure the Rockettes’ fourth-straight win.
Shear Serenity, meanwhile, now has lost two in a row.
In the night’s second game, Joleigh Hayes had a hat trick as the La Place Rendez-Vous Rage (5-1-1) cruised to a 5-0 win over the Fine Foods Fury (3-4).
Sara Kellar and Avery Wilson-Hands scored the other goals for the Rage (5-1-1), who stayed one point behind the Rockettes in the chase for first place.
Action resume next Wednesday when the Rage face the Strykers at 7 p.m.
The Rockettes and Fury will follow at 8:15.
