Lorne Ricard of Fort Frances was at the top of the heap in his division Sunday at the annual Manitoba Marathon in Winnipeg, capturing first place in the men’s 55-59 age group with a time of 3:18:28.
That time also was good enough to finish in 41st place overall, and 35th overall among male runners.
“It’s pretty unbelievable really,” Ricard said.
“That time means that I’ve now qualified for the Boston Marathon, so that kind of makes it an easier decision for that event now that I don’t have to worry about qualifying,” he added.
Ricard was joined at the event by his son, Rick, who took part in the half-marathon, placing 101st in the male 25-29 age division with a time of 1:59:37.
“Now it’s a time of rest and relaxation for us,” smiled Lorne Ricard, who is next planning to run in Walker, Mn. in September along with his son.
The Manitoba Marathon itself was won by Winnipeg’s Phillip Samoei, who finished in a time of 2:35:42.

Meanwhile, in Duluth on Saturday, Kerry Zub of Fort Frances took part in the annual Grandma’s Marathon, finishing in 133rd place in the women’s 35-39 age category with a time of 4:01:27.
Cam Moorhouse (1:40:27) and Selena Morris (2:05:03) also ran in a half-marathon in Duluth, with Moorhouse finishing 30th in the men’s 50-54 division while Morris was 200th in the women’s 35-39 group.
