The Rainy River Rebels claimed the PeeWee hockey tournament in Emo last weekend with 2-1 overtime victory over Kenora Blue Esso in the final Sunday afteroon.
After a scoreless first and second frame, both teams poured on the power in the final stanza–with Kenora drawing first blood when Brandon Speight scored unassisted at 7:32.
But with just 1:33 to play, Jason Sequin (assisted by Blake Mykytyn) tied the score at 1-1 and sent the game into overtime, where Alex Matthew tallied unassisted on a breakaway to give the Rebels the hard-fought win.
Rainy River blanked the Emo Panthers 2-0 in one semi-final on goals by Kevin Nordberg and Henning Peterson. Meanwhile, Blue Esso sidelined the Law Association Sharks (Fort Frances) 2-1 in the other semi-final.
Sean Councillor had given the Fort squad a 1-0 lead in the first period. But Logan Whyte tied the game with eight minutes left in the second, then Alex Belanger notched the game-winner with 10 minutes to play.
In the ‘B’-final, Jeremy Hyatt had a hat trick to help Emo Gillon’s to a 5-3 win over the Century Cinema Stars. Ryan Fedorak and Mitchell Mosher added singles while Eric Daw was strong in goal, especially during the final minutes.
Gord Percy (two) and Chris Badiuk replied for Century Cinema.
Gillons’ advanced to the ‘B’ final by doubling Auto Value 6-3 in one semi-final. Hyatt once again led Emo, this time with four tallies, while Fedorak and Greg Hartlin netted one each.
Kirby Ramsy (two) and Adam Hockett scored for Auto Value.
In the other semi-final, Century Cinema skated all over the Sioux Lookout Panthers 8-2.
The ‘C’-final saw Kenora Red Esso nip the KFC Colonels (Fort Frances) 3-2 in a tight match.
Trailing 2-0 after the first on goals by Jesse Zroback and David Defeo, the Colonels cut into that lead on Andrew Gerley’s tally midway through the second.
Travis Babiachuk later regained the two-goal margin for Red Esso, which proved to be needed when Shane Belluz made it interesting with about 90 seconds to play.
The Colonels edged the Fort Frances Lions 2-1 in one semi-final. Scott Bridgeman and James Ring scored for the Colonels while Terry Kellar (assisted by Kyle DeGagne) got the Lions’ lone goal.
Meanwhile, Kenora Red Esso was hard-pressed to squeak past Fort Frances Esso 2-1 in the other semi-final. Corey Nawolski and Babiachuk scored for Kenora while Matt Sisco replied for the Fort.
First-round results saw Kenora Blue Esso handle the Fort Frances Lions 6-1, the Colonels edge Auto Value 1-0, Beaver Lumber double the Law Association Sharks 4-2, and Rainy River Rebels blank the Kantola Jets 8-0.
Meanwhile, Kenora Red Esso double JP Roundhouse 4-2 and the Emo Panthers sidelined Century Cinema Stars 4-1.
