Rainy River blanks Selects

Even with the Christmas holidays, Emo minor hockey action did not slack off, playing opponents on a regular nightly basis.
The Selects split their games, first coming out on the short end of a 7-0 score against Rainy River. Mitch Gouliquer led the way with two goals while Caleb Shoemaker, Erik Peterson, Ron Ernst, Henning Peterson and Jason Sequin added singles.
But against International Falls, the Selects got goals from Sean Rae and David Goodman to edge the visitors 2-1.
Riley Burnell had opened the scoring for the Falls midway through the first.
In other action, the Emo Wings outlasted their home-town rivals, the OPP, by a 4-3 count, with the game winner coming off the stick of Brock Benjamin (his second) with only 37 seconds to play.
Rebecca Witherspoon and Tyson Romyn also scored for the Wings while T.J. Roen (two) and Tyler Kinnear replied for the OPP.
Meanwhile, the Emo Cowboys slipped a notch in losing both their games. The first one saw the IBEW Lightning (Fort Frances) skate away with a 2-0 win on goals by David Lovisa and Kevin Webb.
Then the KCs defeated a slow-moving Cowboys’ squad 3-1. Bryce Witherspoon, Dennis Morrison and B.J. Tucker rifled home goals for the Fort while Charles Fisher netted Emo’s only tally.
But it was a different story for the Emo Panthers, who clawed their way to a pair of victories in two tries.
First they earned a 2-0 win over the Gillons’ Hawks (Emo) on goals by Daniel Hettinga and Jeff Hyatt, then they beat Esso (Fort Frances) by a 4-1 margin.
Jeremy Hyatt and Eric Mosbeck each blinked the light twice for the Panthers while B. Lambert saved Esso from the shutout.
