Rain washes out three games

Rain postponed three of the four scheduled games last Tuesday in Rainy River District Fastball League action.
After three weeks of play, a total of five games already have been postponed. The set of make-up games will be played next Thursday (June 13).
The only game played last Tuesday was a battle of the top two teams. Rainy River Legion paid Big Island a visit and handed them their first loss of the season, 5-3.
The Legion (5-1), the newest entry in the RRDFL made up of former Stratton Bobcats players, has made its mark early on. “It’s just been timely hitting,” said Legion starting pitcher Murray Armstrong, whose team is widening the gap between second-place Big Island (3-1) and third-place Sight and Sound (2-1-1).
“We’ve been coming together really well,” Armstrong added.
The biggest upset of the week came last Thursday as Hyatt’s Construction rallied for a 6-5 victory against the defending league champion Bulldogs.
Down 5-0 after five innings, Hyatt’s scored four runs in the sixth and then two more in the bottom of the seventh for the comeback win.
“That was a big win,” said team captain Will Windigo, whose second-year team improved to 1-1-1 with the win—good for fifth in the nine-team league.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 2-2 and into a fourth-place tie with Barwick and Pinewood.
Big Grassy and Stratton sit in the basement with identical 0-4 records.
Of reported games, Don Gall (Rainy River) has jumped into a first-place tie with Travis Derkson (Barwick) in the home run derby with three.
Don Copenace (Bulldogs), Kevin Gemmell (Barwick), Kyle Langlais (Pinewood), Shane Bliss (Bulldogs), and Harvey Flamand (Sight and Sound) each have two.
Armstrong leads all pitchers with a 3-1 record, followed closely by Barwick’s George Oltsher (2-0) and Will Handorgan of Big Island (2-0).
In related news, the Bulldogs will host a tournament this weekend at the Couchiching ball diamond, which will mark its debut in RRDFL play.
A new outfield wall has been put up and the field refurbished since the Bulldogs left Emo and announced their move there last month.
They’ve had to play two of their home games at VanJura Stadium in the meantime.
