R.R. council to revamp snowmobile bylaw

Rainy River is officially without a bylaw to govern the operation of motorized snow vehicles in town limits.
Council rescinded the existing bylaw Monday night with the intent of introducing a new one right after it.
But once the new bylaw was read for the first time, Municipal Administrator Deb Bowman said the wrong one was placed in the package.
Mayor Gord Prost said the intent of the new bylaw is to make sure snowmobilers only travel on designated trails. It would see the elimination of usage on all streets in town limits except those deemed as useable by council.
Second and Sixth Streets were discussed as possible routes Monday.
But since the wrong bylaw was put before council, it was referred back to the committee, which will look at the bylaw again this week. Then a special council meeting is set for next Monday (Jan. 15) at 10 a.m. to pass it.
The meeting is open to the public.
Mayor Prost noted the committee sought input from the local snowmobile club, which told the committee what access routes it would need.
While the mayor spoke in favour of needing a snowmobile bylaw in Rainy River, he did admit in open council that he feels it will be unenforceable.
In related news, Rainy River council unanimously approved the erection of a fence at the hill just east of Ike Dyck’s home on River Avenue East to prevent snowmobiles from using it to access the river or town.
