Queens win silver at Winter Games

The Thunder Bay Queens, featuring local player Sarah Barton, earned a silver medal in women’s hockey at the Ontario Winter Games in London last weekend.
The Queens, who played two exhibition games here last month, represented Northwestern Ontario at the Games.
“Sarah did good,” said her dad, Clint, who went down to watch the Queens play in London. “She was part of the team and worked very hard. I’m very proud of her.”
The Queens opened round-robin play with a 3-1 win over the London Devilettes. Then they beat the Quinte-Belleville Bearcats 6-4, before losing their third game 6-2 to the Clearview Ice Stars (Barrie).
In the quarter-finals, the Queens downed the Niagara Rapids 6-2 and then edged the Sarnia Junior Lady Sting 3-2 in overtime in the semi-finals.
The Queens later lost 3-1 to the Nepean Wildcats in the final to settle for the silver medal.
“That’s the end of the season and she’s coming home to play soccer,” Barton said of his daughter.
