The Thunder Bay Queens Midget women’s hockey team, which includes former Muskie forward Jillian Langtry, fell just short of their quest to capture the Esso Cup national championship.
The squad fell 4-2 to the Pembina Valley Hawks (Morden, Man.) in the final Saturday afternoon in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Despite out-shooting the Hawks 37-19, the Queens were turned aside time and time again by goalie Brittini Mowat.
Meanwhile, Cassidy Carels netted a pair of goals to help her team take the crown.
Kaitlyn Tougas and Michela Cava scored for the Queens, who were looking to capture their second Esso Cup title after winning the 2010 championship.
Thunder Bay, which finished the round-robin with a perfect 5-0 record, advanced to the final after rallying for a 4-2 triumph over Metro Boston Pizza (Halifax) in the semi-finals Friday night.
Trailing 2-0 early in the second, Cava and Jessica Gazzola scored two goals apiece later in the frame to put the Queens in front for good.
Langtry, who finished the tournament with five goals and four assists to sit in a three-way tie for fifth in scoring with nine points, was held off the scoresheet in both playoff games.
