Likening the Fort Frances Pirates’ lineup to the “Murderers’ Row” of the 1927 N.Y. Yankees may be giving too much credit—to the Yankees.
The Pirates sent 14 men to the plate en route to a 10-run third inning that keyed a 20-4 victory over Windey’s Warriors in Rainy River District Fastball League action last night at Couchiching.
With six members of the now-defunct three-time defending champion Big Grassy Braves on its roster, the Pirates (2-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second against Windey’s starter Rob McGinnis.
Then the floodgates opened the following frame.
A two-run homer by Don “Kimbi” Copenace, a two-run double by Cole Tymkin, and a two-run single by Jesse Tom highlighted the offensive explosion that had Fort Frances up 13-0 when all was said and done.
Travis Tom earned the win and also delivered a solo homer for Fort Frances, as did Linden Indian.
McGinnis took the loss for the Warriors (1-1), who got a two-run home run from Jeremiah Windego—his third of the season.
That put Windego into a tie for the league lead in homers with Kevin Gemmell, who jacked a pair in the Barwick Blue Knights’ 14-6 win over the visiting Dawson Tigers.
J.J. Landry’s pitching helped the Blue Knights (3-0) keep pace with the Manitou Thunderbirds for first place.
Mitch Seguin took the loss for the Tigers (1-2).
The Thunderbirds won their third-straight with another stellar outing on the mound from Jeff Morrison in a 9-1 home win against the Rainy River Royals (0-4).
Morrison has allowed just three runs in his three starts for Manitou (3-0), and also drilled two homers to go along with one from Austin Jack.
Carl Big George Jr. was tagged with the loss.
The Sight & Sound Wolves, meanwhile, improved to 2-0 with a 9-2 defeat of the
Sabaskong Lakers (0-4) at VanJura.
Mike Bodnarchuk had a pair of round-trippers for the Wolves while John Desaulniers got the win over John Big George.
In other action last night, the Couchiching Raiders (2-1) earned a 4-1 win over the host Sabaskong Cubs (1-2).
Chris Morrisseau got the victory while Reo Walton had a homer against losing pitcher Kevin Copenace.
And Guy Arpin pitched the Stratton Bobcats to a 2-0 start with an 8-6 victory over the visiting Big Island Huskies.
Matt Comegan was tagged with the loss for the Huskies (0-3), who got a homer from Derek Andy.
Action resumes Tuesday, with Sight & Sound hosting the Cubs and the Pirates at Couchiching among the games.
First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
