Pinewood recovers, hosts tournament

While last week’s storm wrecked a fair portion of Pinewood’s ball diamond facilities, organizers fixed it well enough to host their annual invitational fastball tournament last weekend.
A team comprised of players from Fargo, N.D. and Winnipeg took home top honours after edging Kakabeka Falls 3-0 in Sunday’s final.
Four Rainy River District Fastball League teams took part in the tourney, with Pinewood and Zig’s Place reaching the semi-finals.
Barwick and Stratton also participated.
Other teams involved were a full Fargo team, one from Vassar, and two teams out of Dryden.
The RRDFL’s top team, the Emo Bulldogs, pulled out due to scheduling problems. They plan to compete at the Eagle Lake tournament near Dryden this weekend.
Next up for the league is its all-star game, slated for tomorrow (Thursday) at 7 p.m. in Pinewood. League playoff action is slated Aug. 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, and 30.
As of Monday, the Bulldogs were leading the standings at 17-2, followed by Stratton (12-5) and Pinewood (9-8). Two wins separate the remaining five teams of Barwick (7-10-1), Big Island (7-12), Zig’s Place (6-13-1), Big Grassy (5-10), and Sight and Sound (5-11),
Don Copenace (Emo), last year’s home run champ, once again leads everyone with nine dingers this season. Five others–Shane Bliss (Emo), Don Gall (Stratton), Bob Andy (Big Grassy), Brent Tookenay (Emo), and Warren Voth (Emo)–are all tied for second place with six each.
In addition to his six homers, Voth also has a league-leading 11-2 record on the mound. Murray Armstrong (Stratton) is next at 10-4, followed by John Desaulnier (Pinewood) with a 9-6 record.
