It wasn’t the colour they wanted but Jess Caul and her teammates didn’t come home empty-handed from the “Sunshine State.”
The Providence University College Pilots, from Otterburne, Man., doubled the Cairn University Highlanders (Langhorne, Penn.) 4-2 on Saturday to claim the bronze medal at the National Christian College Athletic Association Division II women’s soccer championships in Kissimmee, Fla.
The goal scorers were unavailable by press time today.
The Pilots came into the event ranked No. 1.
But a 4-0 loss to the Bob Jones University Bruins (Greenville, S.C.) on Thursday left them in second place in Pool ‘A,’ forcing them to settle for a spot in the third-place game against the sixth-seeded Highlanders.
The fourth-ranked Bruins captured their first national championship Saturday with a 1-0 victory over the defending champion and second-seeded Clearwater Christian University Cougars (Clearwater, Fla.)
Providence also had two players named to the all-tournament team, with forward Julika Kehler and defender Robyn Coffey getting the nod.
Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded Pilots’ men’s team ended up in fourth place at the nationals.
They fell 5-2 to the fifth-ranked Lancaster Bible College Chargers (Lancaster, Penn.) in their bronze-medal game Saturday.
