Pharmasave, Gillons’ win soccer titles

The finals for the Borderland Soccer League were held here yesterday afternoon, with Pharmasave taking the men’s title and Gillons’ winning the women’s crown in a pair of hard-fought matches.
Despite many late scoring chances for Emo, Pharmasave hung on for the 3-2 victory.
Mike Webb had put Pharmasave up 1-0 early in the game. The team continued to control much of the first half, but solid defence by Emo kept the ball out of the net.
Josiah Morris made it 2-0 in the second half when his long kick just barely made it past Emo’s keeper.
But Emo stormed back and tied the game on a pair of goals by Shane Ikert and Doug Veldhuisen. Ikert then continued to push offensively but was unable to convert several scoring chances.
Pharmasave iced the win on Kai Winkler’s goal late in the second half.
Meanwhile, Gillons’ beat Curves 4-1 on the women’s side earlier yesterday afternoon.
Despite some early offence by Gillons’, Katelyn Basaraba scored for Curves on their first shot of the game, which held up until halftime.
Gillons’ came out hard in the second half and after several good scoring chances, Claire Crichton tied the game.
The squad then dominated the rest of the way, getting two goals from Andrea Boileau and one by Sarah Gould to seal the win and the league title.
